Walking

Ordnance Survey Explorer Map 311The countryside around the Isle offers some superb opportunities for walking. Use a good map, such as the OS Explorer Sheet 311, which at 1:25000 scale provides a wealth of information.

View of the Isle of ManIf you've plenty of time, (about 4-5 hours) then a coastal path from Burrowhead (accessed via the Holiday Village) can be used to get to St Ninian's Cave. This gives splendid views of the Isle of Man, as well as sea-bird life. You should always bear in mind that weather can, and does change, and that clifftop routes in particular demand care. Children and dogs should be kept under control.

Dumfries and Galloway Walks (Jarrold-Ordnance Survey)It's also possible to walk along a cliff path, leaving the Laigh Isle chalets on the north side of the village, towards Stein Head. Walking in and Around the Machars

A useful little guide booklet Walking in and Around the Machars is obtainable locally at Tourist Information points.

More information on the facilities and services - public transport, etc can be obtained at www.dumfriesandgalloway.co.uk
