The Isle of Whithorn
Around us the Waves
The Isle of Whithorn, a picturesque Scottish fishing village at the tip of the Machars peninsula in Galloway has a long and proud history. This was the place that built ships and bred sailors. The heritage of this 300-strong community has been determined largely by the sea, and also by the land around.
In this 160-page book, with over 200 illustrations in colour, the people of the Isle tell their own story, as related through the columns of its magazine Isle News. Here is a vividly illustrated and fascinating treasure trove of history, with tales of shipwreck, hard-working enterprise, and childhood memories of school, the surroundings and the sheer beauty of the place.
It’s also a privileged insight into a community whose present-day endeavours have earned it much national acclaim.
Copies of Around us the Waves are priced at £10.50 and will be available to order from the Isle of Whithorn website from July 2010.
